Summer 2013 was quite an eventful, exciting and unpredictable time of my year. As a young adult as well as a striving photographer. I had the privilege of working as the staff photographer at Word of Life's Island summer camp. The camp accomdated teens from the ages of 12 up till 19. Every summer, week 5 of camp is known for its themed specialty of "Skate Week". This week is open to any campers who are interested in any sport with wheels. (e.g. Skateboards, BMX, Rollerblades, Trick Scooters etc.)
This is when I met Mike Steinkamp. Mike was on the scene simply to do what he loves to do, "Sharing the love Jesus Christ through skateboarding". That's exactly what he did. He got the crowds attention with a skateboard. Followed by a testimony of how Jesus Christ played a significant role in his life as a young skater in the industry till this day.
To keep this short and simple, Mike had the awesome idea of going out onto "Rock - Island" (which was probably only 100 feet long) which was right on the outside of Word of Life Island ( a 50 acre Island in case you were wondering). Me being me, I was down to take photos of anything. Me being me of course, slept through my alarm of course and woke up to Mike standing beside my bed. 7 am, hopped outta bed, grabbed my gear and we were off.
Lets skip ahead two months, the day after my birthday. At the time I was stationed in Nairobi, Kenya doing freelance photo work. I get a message from Mike himself stating that one of the photos I had taken that summer was published in the September/October issue of Focus Skate Magazine. Talk about a belated birthday present, my first publishing ever! Heres the pdf. version below, feel free to read from Mike Steinkamp's perspective of the day. Be sure to check out his awesome ministry as well @ http://msskateministry.com/
