Barbers are those who cut, dress, groom, shave and style hair of both the male and female gender. Just like anything else in society, barbering and barbers are heavily influenced by various aspects and elements. For example the time period, music, fashion, location, lifestyle, all these elements make up the culture both in front and behind barbering. It's more than just a place where one gets their haircut, but a gathering place away from work, away from home. A place where you can walk in feeling like a mess and then leave feeling like you can conquer the world. Barbershops are well known for being a sanctuary of skilled craftsman, concentration, hard work, good times, and great laughs.
I had the opportunity to photograph the Barbers over at Genesis Barbers located in Woodbridge, Virginia. Located approximately thirty minutes away from Washington D.C., Genesis Barbers are a thriving group of talented, welcoming, barbers who love what they do. Being able to capture the process of cutting hair is the perfect blend of doing my two favorite hobbies at once, photography and barbering. Often on social media we see a lot of the "finished" product and never enough of the process. Nor do we see the little moments that still happen within a shop. My goal for this set was to capture of glimpse of all that. Thank you to the barbers of Genesis Barbers for welcoming me! Your passion and talent has inspired me to work harder at what I do. To everyone else reading this, I hope you can experience a bit of what it's like being in the barbershop. Enjoy!
